Which repairs require a building permit?
    Generally speaking, all repairs require a building permit. This includes but is not limited to, any structural repairs (walls, floor, sub-floors, joists, foundations, etc.), drywall, HVAC, water systems, electrical systems, windows and doors, etc. Only very minor repairs are exempt from building permits. These may include floor coverings, painting and the installation / repair of kitchen cabinetry. If you are in doubt about your projects need for a building permit please contact the Kankakee County Planning Department at 815-937-2940.
 
Where do I go to get a building permit?
    If your property is located in unincorporated Kankakee County you may obtain a building permit at:

NEW Properties affected by the recent January 2008 Flood Event are exempt from paying permit fees to Kankakee County. This applies only to those properties located in the unincorporated areas that have been damaged by the flood and only applies to flood damage.

What information will I need to apply for a building permit?
  1. Any documentation that the owner may have from previous permits or flood events. (Elevation Certificate, Floodplain Survey, LOMA/LOMR Documentation)
  2. Photographs.
  3. Description of proposed repairs and work to be completed.
  4. List of proposed contractors.
 
BEWARE OF SCAMS

DANGER
When entering a structure after a flood or other disaster please take extra precaution with the electrical and gas systems. Damp electrical systems can pose fire and electrocution hazards while gas systems can create fire, explosion and suffocation dangers. Please have these systems inspected by a qualified technician prior to occupying a structure.
